Using veneers from around the globe including Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, America and Canada, Leo continues to apply his expertise and enthusiasm for fine art through wall hangings and marquetry inlays in his furniture company of 36 years… ‘Gleam Manufacturing’
Leo is now a lecturer of the fine art. Teaching at colleges across the country, he is a traveling mentor - still called upon for advice by his sons Daniel and Peter who now run the business at home on the Gold Coast.
Leo’s teachings ensure while in this age of mass produced and low quality products, craftsmanship is still highly valued and sought after.
Marquetry is primarily the inlaying of small pieces of different materials including Ivory, Silver, Stone, Exotic Timbers and the like, to create a pattern or picture on a piece of furniture or wall hanging etc.
With today's knowledge and materials available to us, we can create any picture we desire.
There are many hours of work in each picture... First the subject is chosen, drawn, then traced on to a piece of veneer, it is then carefully cut with a doctors scalpel, a contrasting veneer is chosen and cut exactly to fit in to the space that the first veneer cut was made. To create a work of art this procedure is repeated a number of times, depending on the number of different veneers used. It is then pressed on to a panel, sanded with a fine sandpaper, polished and framed. The end result speaks for itself.
It is truly a work of art...
